The effects of pollution on Salmon

Facts

*Sock-eye salmon are the most sensitive to low p.h waters

*18 miles of river was lost/deemed dead because of the acid waters

*The current Alaska water quality standard requires a pH between 6.5 and 8.5

*pH less than 4.5: All salmon and other fish species will die or be displaced from a water body.

*An acceptable alkalinity level for salmon culture is in the 40 to 100 ppm range

*pH levels of 7.0 to 8.0 are considered optimal to maintain a productive ecosystem

*If pH falls below the tolerance range even for a short period, death can occur

*when having acidy waters prey species for salmon drop significantly.
